When we first met with the homeowners in Burien, WA, they expressed a desire to transform their aging, weather-beaten deck into a modern, functional outdoor retreat. Their main goal was to create a space that not only enhanced the beauty of their King County home but also provided practical solutions for evening entertainment and secure play areas for their children and pets.

Taking into account their needs, we decided to elevate the deck to offer a broader view of their well-maintained backyard and to make the transition from inside to outside feel seamless. The choice of gray composite decking was deliberate; it promised durability and easy maintenance while beautifully complementing the light-colored exterior of their home. The white aluminum railings with black balusters were added to give a contemporary look while ensuring robust safety features.

To address the family’s safety concerns, especially with two young children who love to play outdoors, we incorporated a gated entry at the top of the stairs. This feature provided peace of mind, knowing the kids could play safely without the risk of wandering down the steps.

One of the standout requests was the need for ambient lighting that would allow the family to enjoy the deck after sunset without compromising on safety. We installed recessed lights in the steps, which not only illuminated the pathway during the evening hours but also added a warm, inviting glow to the deck’s atmosphere.

Underneath, we utilized lattice panels to enclose the underdeck area, providing an aesthetically pleasing storage solution for their patio furniture and outdoor equipment. This design choice kept the deck area uncluttered and ensured everything had its place.

From design through to completion, our focus remained on creating a space that reflected the homeowners’ style and met their functional needs. The result was a stunning outdoor retreat that became a central part of their home in Burien, where memories would be made for years to come.
